Worlds Apart (2015)

In a restless Athens against the backdrop of Greece’s socio-economic collapse, three vivid stories of intercultural romance intertwine, depicting the turmoil and the inner sadness of a country amid a ceaseless explosion of immigration and financial meltdown. In this colourful triptych of love, the Syrian refugee, Farris, saves a damsel in distress, the idealist college student, Daphne, as a seemingly endless wave of fervent nationalism spreads in town. Then, in the following segment, Giorgos, an unhappily-married, pill-popping sales manager, delves deep into an unexpected affair with Elise, the frigidly beautiful Scandinavian corporate executive. Finally, Maria, a wistful Greek housewife whose family is struggling to keep afloat, has a fateful encounter with the retired German expatriate, Sebastian, who offers Maria a second chance in love before the well-stocked aisles of a local supermarket. Two men make the dangerous journey from Africa to Italy for a better life, but then face hostility and violence in this shocking look at the life-and-death struggle of refugees. Εκείνη είχε πάρει βραβείο μικρού μήκους στο φεστιβάλ της Βενετίας, ενώ αυτή έκανε πρεμιέρα στο τμήμα Δεκαπενθήμερο Κριτικής του φεστιβάλ των Κανών. Mondomanila (2010)

A joyfully outrageous slice of life in the slums set to a punky soundtrack, Mondomanila is a slap in the face of Western expectations of politely miserabilist depictions of the downtrodden. A hyper kinetic, super stylised wild carnival of the destitute, it follows a midget, a one-armed rapper, a ‘day-glo fairy’, a disabled pimp and their friends as they try to get as much sex and drugs as they can (‘the only solution to their problems’, we are told by main character Tony at the beginning) and tackle a racist white paedophile. A toothless showman opens this exuberant bad taste spectacle, promising something horrible and creepy, but the Mondo-style shockumentary aspect is underpinned by the crude reality of life in Manila, making the film vital and energising. Polyester (1981)

 Polyester is a 1981 comedy film directed, produced, and written by John Waters, and starring Divine, Tab Hunter, Edith Massey, and Mink Stole. It was filmed in Waters’ native Baltimore, Maryland, and features a gimmick called “Odorama”, whereby viewers could smell what they saw on screen through scratch and sniff cards.  The film is a satirical look at suburban life involving divorce, abortion, adultery, alcoholism, foot fetishism, and the Religious Right.  Dreamlanders John Waters’ usual troupe of actors, the Dreamlanders, played minor roles in Polyester compared to Waters’ previous films Desperate Living, Female Trouble, and Pink Flamingos, which starred several Dreamlanders in major roles. Only two Dreamlanders, Divine and Edith Massey, received top billing in this film. Dreamlander perennials Mink Stole, Mary Vivian Pearce, Cookie Mueller, Sharon Niesp, Marina Melin, Susan Lowe, and Jean Hill played small roles in Polyester.  Spanish director Sebastián, his executive producer Costa and all his crew are in Bolivia, in the Cochabamba area, to shoot a motion picture about Christopher Columbus, his first explorations and the way the Spaniards treated the Indians at the time. Costa has chosen this place because the budget of the film is tight and here he can hire supernumeraries, local actors and extras on the cheap. Things go more or less smoothly until a conflict erupts over the privatization of the water supply.
